The HORIBA RZ-660 is a specialized in vivo Raman spectroscopy system designed for clinical research, biomedical diagnostics, and pharmaceutical applications where real-time, non-invasive chemical analysis of biological tissue or pharmaceutical materials is required. The RZ-660 uses a fiber-optic Raman probe approach that enables safe, non-destructive measurements at 830 nm excitation – a wavelength chosen to minimize tissue autofluorescence while providing adequate signal for tissue characterization. In clinical research applications, the system is used for studies including skin cancer margin assessment, breast tissue analysis during surgery, bone quality assessment, and characterization of atherosclerotic plaques. In pharmaceutical settings, the RZ-660 can be used for in-process monitoring of powder blending, tablet coating, and other manufacturing steps where real-time chemical information is needed. The system features compact electronics compatible with clinical environments and uses HORIBA’s high-efficiency spectrograph design optimized for low-fluorescence operation at near-infrared excitation. Fiber-optic probes allow remote sample access in environments where a large instrument cannot be brought to the sample.
