The HORIBA nanoPartica SZ-100V2 is an integrated nanoparticle characterization system combining dynamic light scattering (DLS) for particle size measurement, zeta potential measurement for colloidal stability assessment, and optionally molecular weight determination by static light scattering (SLS). The instrument is designed for the characterization of nanoparticles, colloids, proteins, and macromolecules in solution, covering a size range from 0.3 nm to 8 µm by DLS. Dynamic light scattering measures the time-dependent fluctuations in scattered light intensity caused by Brownian motion of particles in suspension, and converts the autocorrelation function of these fluctuations to a hydrodynamic size distribution via the Stokes-Einstein equation. The SZ-100V2 uses a 532 nm laser and backscattering detection at 173° for concentrated samples, as well as 90° scattering for dilute samples. Zeta potential measurement is performed using electrophoretic light scattering (ELS): an electric field is applied to the sample, and the electrophoretic mobility of particles is measured from the Doppler shift of scattered light, then converted to zeta potential. Zeta potential is a critical parameter for predicting colloidal stability – highly charged nanoparticles (|ζ| > 30 mV) are typically stable against aggregation, while particles near zero zeta potential tend to aggregate. The SZ-100V2 is widely used for nanoparticle drug delivery characterization (liposomes, polymeric NPs), protein size and aggregation screening, quality control of colloidal dispersions, and academic nanoscience research.
