The HORIBA Partica CENTRIFUGE is a centrifugal sedimentation particle size analyzer that achieves ultra-high resolution particle size distributions in the submicron to low-micron size range (3 nm to 6 µm) where laser diffraction instruments typically provide limited resolution. The instrument operates on the principle of centrifugal sedimentation: particles in a liquid suspension are subjected to a centrifugal field and sediment at rates proportional to their size (Stokes’ law under centrifugal force), while a photometric detector monitors the transmitted light intensity as particles settle past a fixed detection zone. Because the separation is based on actual sedimentation velocity rather than light scattering from an ensemble, the Partica CENTRIFUGE provides extremely high size resolution – capable of resolving particle populations that differ by as little as a few nanometers.
