A microelectrode, Kelvin probe or vibrating probe is positioned micrometres above the surface and rastered under precise motion control. Depending on the module it measures faradaic current, Volta potential difference, local impedance or local current density, and the workstation reconstructs the result as a map of electrochemical activity.
