The HORIBA SDS470 is a scanning droplet system (SDS) that enables spatially resolved electrochemical measurements on metallic and coated surfaces by delivering a small electrolyte droplet to defined positions on the sample surface rather than immersing the entire sample in solution. In the SDS technique, a miniaturized electrochemical cell is formed between the sample surface and a capillary nozzle that delivers and maintains a small droplet of electrolyte at the contact point while the counter and reference electrodes are integrated in or around the capillary. This micro-droplet cell allows standard electrochemical measurements — cyclic voltammetry, polarization curves, EIS, and even SECM measurements — to be performed at a precisely defined local spot on the surface, with the ability to move the droplet to different positions across the sample to build a map of local electrochemical properties. The SDS approach is particularly powerful for mapping heterogeneous surfaces where different microstructural regions have different electrochemical behaviors (alloy phases, weld zones, inclusion clusters), for measuring coated samples where full immersion would cause electrolyte ingress into defects, and for studying surface chemistry at selected sites on large samples.
