The HORIBA M470 is the central workstation and scanner platform underpinning HORIBA’s entire scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) product line. At its core, the M470 provides a high-resolution, motorized XYZ positioning stage that moves the electrochemical probe over the sample surface with micrometer-level accuracy, combined with an integrated potentiostat and frequency response analyzer (FRA) for electrochemical control and impedance spectroscopy measurements. The M470 is designed as a modular system: different probe types and measurement modules can be attached and exchanged to configure the system for SECM, localized electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (LEIS), scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET), scanning Kelvin probe (SKP), scanning droplet systems, or other scanning probe electrochemical measurements — without replacing the base scanner hardware. This modularity is a key advantage, allowing a single instrument investment to cover multiple measurement modalities as research needs evolve. The potentiostat integrated into the M470 provides the electrochemical signal generation and current measurement required for SECM, CV, and chronoamperometry measurements at microelectrode tips, while the FRA module enables AC impedance (EIS) measurements for LEIS and other frequency-domain techniques. Software control via HORIBA’s SXM software suite provides synchronized probe movement, data acquisition, and image generation, turning measured electrochemical maps into two-dimensional images of local surface activity.
