The HORIBA EMIA Expert is a high-frequency induction furnace combustion carbon and sulfur analyzer designed for precise, rapid determination of total carbon (C) and total sulfur (S) content in metals, steels, cast irons, alloys, ceramics, refractories, ores, minerals, and other solid inorganic materials. The measurement principle is combustion analysis: the sample is placed in a ceramic crucible and heated in a high-frequency induction furnace to over 1400 degrees C in a stream of pure oxygen. Carbon in the sample is oxidized to carbon dioxide (CO2), and sulfur is oxidized to sulfur dioxide (SO2). The evolved combustion gases are carried by the oxygen stream to infrared (IR) detectors: CO2 is measured by a non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) detector calibrated for carbon content, and SO2 is measured by a separate NDIR detector for sulfur. The EMIA Expert provides multiple IR detection channels covering different concentration ranges, enabling accurate measurement from ultra-trace levels to high carbon content without dilution or range-switching limitations. The instrument is fully automated: it initiates the combustion, measures the evolved gases, and reports the C and S results in weight percent or ppm within about 60-90 seconds per sample. The EMIA Expert complies with international standards including ISO 9556 (steel C/S by combustion), ASTM E1807 and E1019, and JIS methods. Applications include incoming inspection of steel and iron, carbon determination in ceramics and refractories, sulfur in ores and environmental samples, and C/S in geological materials.
