The BioLogic Flat Cell is a specialized corrosion electrochemical cell designed for testing flat, plate-like material samples — metal coupons, coated substrates, painted panels, and similar flat specimens. Unlike conventional round-flask electrochemical cells that require immersion of a rotating disk or inserted electrode, the Flat Cell holds the flat sample as the working electrode with a defined, masked-off exposed area, providing reproducible and well-defined measurement conditions for corrosion testing.

The Flat Cell enables the full range of corrosion measurement techniques available in EC-Lab: open circuit potential (OCV) monitoring, potentiodynamic polarization (Tafel curves, anodic/cathodic sweeps), linear polarization resistance (LPR) for corrosion rate determination, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) for characterization of coating quality, oxide film properties, and charge transfer kinetics at the metal/solution interface. The defined exposed area allows quantitative calculation of corrosion current density and corrosion rate in conventional units (mm/year, µm/year, or mpy) directly from the measurement.

The Flat Cell is particularly valuable for quality control testing of protective coatings, comparative evaluation of surface treatments and inhibitors, and fundamental corrosion science studies on defined material samples. It is compatible with standard laboratory corrosive solutions (NaCl, H2SO4, etc.) and provides connections for reference and counter electrode placement.
