Innovative contact angle meter capable of studying surface roughness and adjusting the result accordingly.
The Attension® Theta Topography from Biolin Scientific adds roughness corrected contact angle measurements to the Theta Flow and Theta Flex platforms. Using the fringe projection phase shifting method, it measures 3D surface roughness and corrects the contact angle accordingly, distinguishing the influence of surface chemistry from that of roughness on wettability. This makes it a valuable tool for studying and developing coatings and materials.

Why roughness correction matters?
When a droplet is placed on a surface, its shape is governed not only by the chemical interaction between the liquid and the solid, but also by the roughness of the surface itself. This is why repeated contact angle measurements across the same sample often scatter, and why it is impossible to tell from the measured angle alone whether the variation comes from surface chemistry or from roughness.
The roughness corrected contact angle removes the roughness contribution. Surface roughness is measured at the same spot as the contact angle, and the correction is applied using the Wenzel equation, in which a roughness factor relates the measured angle to the corrected one. The result is a value that reflects surface chemistry alone.
This matters most when calculating surface free energy. On rough substrates, using the raw static contact angle can shift the result significantly; correcting for roughness brings the values closer to the true equilibrium contact angle, which in turn makes the comparison between a substrate and a coating formulation far more reliable.
