Unlike standard analytical cells optimized for short-duration voltammetric measurements, the bulk electrolysis cell is designed to sustain extended electrolysis runs — hours or longer — for electrochemical synthesis, coulometric determination of analyte amounts, and characterization of reaction mechanisms by tracking total charge passed.

The cell features a design that separates the working electrode compartment from the counter electrode compartment, typically using a membrane, glass frit, or similar separator.
