The HORIBA SLFA-6000 is a benchtop XRF analyzer for rapid, non-destructive determination of sulfur and chlorine content in petroleum products, fuels, and lubricating oils, compliant with international standards such as ASTM D4294 and ISO 20847.
The HORIBA SLFA-6000 is a high-performance energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) analyzer designed specifically for the quantitative determination of total sulfur and chlorine in petroleum-derived products: diesel fuels, gasoline, jet fuels, fuel oils, crude oils, and lubricating oils. Accurate sulfur measurement in fuels is critical for environmental compliance — fuel sulfur specifications worldwide have tightened dramatically (from thousands of ppm to 10 ppm ultra-low sulfur diesel), requiring reliable, traceable analytical methods for refinery process control and finished fuel quality assurance. The SLFA-6000 uses XRF as its measurement technique: the sample (liquid fuel in a cup with thin film window) is irradiated with X-rays, and the characteristic sulfur K-alpha and chlorine K-alpha fluorescence lines are measured by a high-sensitivity detector. This approach is fast (results in minutes), non-destructive, and does not require reagents or combustion gases, making it ideal for routine QC in refineries, fuel depots, and testing laboratories. The SLFA-6000 is designed to comply with international standard methods including ASTM D4294 (sulfur in petroleum products by EDXRF) and ISO 20847. The instrument includes pre-loaded calibration curves for common petroleum matrices and produces direct readout in mg/kg (ppm) or wt%. Chlorine measurement is important as a contaminant indicator that can poison catalysts in refinery processes. NewRoad provides the HORIBA SLFA-6000 in Israel for refineries, fuel testing laboratories, and petrochemical quality control environments.
