The HORIBA MacroRAM is a compact benchtop Raman spectrometer designed for macroscopic sample analysis — easuring Raman spectra from bulk materials, powders, liquids, and intact containers without the need for microscopy or sample preparation. Unlike confocal Raman microscopes, the MacroRAM focuses on macroscopic sampling areas, which makes it highly practical for industrial and analytical laboratory settings where throughput, ease of use, and direct analysis of real-world samples are the primary requirements.

The MacroRAM G utes a fixed, optimized optical configuration with a fiber-optic probe that allows flexible sample presentation — bulk powders can be measured directly in vials or on benchtop stages, liquids can be analyzed through glass or plastic containers using the appropriate probe configuration, and solid tablets or pellets can be analyzed non-destructively. This non-destructive, non-contact measurement capability makes the MacroRAM particularly valuable in pharmaceutical QC for raw material identification, polymorphism screening, and blend uniformity testing without consuming sample.

The system provides full Raman spectra with good signal-to-noise ratio in short measurement times, controlled through HORIBA’s LabSpec 6 software which supports spectral library search, multivariate calibration, and method-based analysis for routine QC workflows. The fixed optical design ensures excellent instrument-to-instrument reproducibility, important for regulatory applications where spectral matching across multiple instruments or sites is required.
