The HORIBA XploRA PLUS is a compact, fully integrated confocal Raman microscope engineered to bring confocal Raman imaging capabilities to a wide range of laboratory environments, from industrial quality control and pharmaceutical analysis to university research and advanced materials characterization. The XploRA PLUS combines an optical microscope with a sensitive Raman spectrometer in a single, space-efficient benchtop instrument, eliminating the optical alignment complexity associated with modular configurations.

The XploRA PLUS supports automatic switching between multiple laser excitation wavelengths, allowing the user to match the excitation wavelength to the sample properties and minimize fluorescence interference without manual laser reconfiguration. The motorized confocal aperture enables true confocal imaging — acquiring Raman maps at multiple depths within a sample — providing spatial discrimination along the z-axis and enabling three-dimensional chemical imaging of layered structures, thin films, and interfaces. Motorized XY mapping stages allow automated acquisition of Raman images over sample areas, building chemical maps that reveal spatial distribution of phases, polymorphs, or compositional gradients.

Typical applications include identification and mapping of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and excipients in tablet cross-sections, characterization of polymer blends and composite materials, analysis of carbon materials including graphene and carbon nanotubes, defect mapping of semiconductor surfaces, quality control of coatings and thin films, and contaminant identification in failure analysis. The instrument operates with HORIBA’s LabSpec 6 software, which provides complete control of mapping, library search for identification, and chemometric analysis tools for multi-component mixture analysis.
