Force tensiometers measure the force a liquid exerts on a probe of known geometry, giving surface and interfacial tension with high accuracy. A plate, ring or rod is brought into contact with the liquid surface and the force acting on it is recorded by an ultrasensitive balance. Surface tension follows directly from that force and the wetted perimeter of the probe. Moving the probe in and out of the liquid additionally yields advancing and receding contact angles, and therefore wetting hysteresis.
