CD Spectrometer

Circular Dichroism (CD) spectroscopy exploits the chiroptical properties of molecules to probe their secondary and tertiary structure in solution. Because biological macromolecules such as proteins and DNA are inherently chiral, CD provides a sensitive, non-destructive method for studying their folding, conformational changes, and thermal stability. NewRoad provides CD spectrophotometers and accessories for structural biology, pharmaceutical formulation analysis, and biomolecular research.

How it works

FROM PRINCIPLE TO APPLICATION

CD instruments generate alternating left- and right-handed circularly polarized light beams and measure the difference in absorbance as a function of wavelength. Chiral chromophores — such as peptide bonds and aromatic amino acid side chains — absorb the two polarizations differently, producing a CD signal. The resulting spectrum is characteristic of molecular secondary structure: alpha-helices, beta-sheets, and random coils each produce distinctive spectral signatures. Thermal melting experiments and ligand titrations further reveal stability and binding interactions.
