The BioLogic BluRev is BioLogic’s rotating disk electrode (RDE) and rotating ring-disk electrode (RRDE) system, designed as an integrated accessory for BioLogic potentiostat instruments. The BluRev provides controlled electrode rotation, enabling hydrodynamic electrochemical measurements where convection is used to control mass transport to the electrode surface — a capability essential for electrocatalysis research and the quantitative study of electrochemical reactions where diffusion alone is insufficient or where kinetic parameters need to be separated from mass transport effects.

For RDE measurements, the BluRev rotates the working electrode disk at controlled rotation rates (typically expressed in RPM), establishing a defined and reproducible diffusion layer thickness at the electrode surface. This enables Koutecky-Levich analysis — plotting current as a function of rotation rate — to extract kinetic rate constants and determine the number of electrons transferred per molecule in reactions such as the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which is central to fuel cell electrocatalysis research. For RRDE measurements, the additional ring electrode surrounding the disk enables simultaneous detection of reaction intermediates produced at the disk, providing information about reaction selectivity and intermediate product stability.

Common applications of the BluRev include ORR activity screening of electrocatalysts for fuel cells, hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) studies, corrosion and passivation kinetics, and any electrochemical reaction where mass-transport-controlled conditions are needed for accurate kinetic analysis. The BluRev connects to compatible BioLogic potentiostats and is controlled via EC-Lab software.
