The HORIBA EMGA Expert 21E is a high-performance analyzer for the simultaneous determination of oxygen (O), nitrogen (N), and hydrogen (H) in solid inorganic materials – a critical analytical requirement in the metals and materials industry where these interstitial elements strongly influence mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and processing behavior. The measurement technique is inert gas fusion (IGF): the solid sample (metal chips, powder, or pellets) is dropped into a graphite crucible in an induction furnace under a flow of high-purity inert gas (helium or argon). At the fusion temperature (up to 3000 degrees C for refractory materials), oxygen in the sample reacts with the graphite crucible to form CO and CO2, nitrogen is released as N2, and hydrogen is released as H2. The carrier gas transports these gases to separate detectors: CO and CO2 are measured by NDIR detectors (giving oxygen content), N2 is measured by a thermal conductivity detector (TCD), and H2 is measured by a TCD. The EMGA Expert 21E provides multiple detection channels covering the full analytical range from sub-ppm to percent levels for each of the three analytes, making it suitable for trace oxygen in high-purity copper or titanium, nitrogen in special steels and cast iron, and hydrogen in aluminum, titanium, and steel. The system complies with international standards including ASTM E1915 (O in steel), ASTM E1447 (H in titanium), ISO 4491, and ASTM methods for refractory analysis.
