The HORIBA Ultima Expert is a flagship inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) designed for high-throughput, high-accuracy multi-element analysis of liquid samples across a wide range of matrices and concentrations. ICP-OES is a technique in which a liquid sample is nebulized and introduced into an argon plasma at approximately 6000-8000 K; at these temperatures, elements are atomized and ionized, and their characteristic optical emission lines are measured simultaneously by a spectrometer. The Ultima Expert incorporates HORIBA’s advanced optical design with simultaneous axial and radial plasma observation: axial viewing provides the highest sensitivity and lowest detection limits, while radial viewing offers better tolerance for high-matrix samples and wider linear dynamic range, allowing the analyst to choose the optimal viewing geometry for each element and concentration range. The instrument uses a high-resolution echelle spectrometer combined with a CCD detector for rapid simultaneous multi-element detection across the full UV-Visible wavelength range (167-800 nm). Quantitative multi-element analysis of 70+ elements is performed in minutes, with detection limits in the microgram-per-liter (ppb) range and dynamic range extending from sub-ppb to thousands of ppm. The Ultima Expert handles complex matrices including environmental water samples, geological digests, biological fluids, industrial process solutions, and pharmaceutical preparations. HORIBA’s Activa software provides automated calibration, interference correction, and spectral background subtraction.
