The HORIBA LEIS470 is a localized electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (LEIS) system built on the M470 scanning platform, designed to acquire spatially resolved impedance maps that reveal the heterogeneous electrochemical properties of coated metals, corrosion interfaces, and composite materials. Global electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) averages the impedance response over the entire sample area, which can mask local features such as coating defects, pinholes, delaminated zones, and active corrosion sites. LEIS resolves this limitation by positioning a small bi-probe electrode close to the sample surface and measuring the local AC current density at each scanned position as a function of frequency, generating a map of local impedance at each point on the surface rather than a single average value. Local impedance maps at different frequencies reveal where the protective coating is intact (high impedance, capacitive response) versus where it has failed (low impedance, resistive response), enabling early detection of coating breakdown and identification of the most corrosion-vulnerable regions before macroscopic damage is visible. The LEIS470 is particularly valuable for evaluating organic coatings on metals (automotive, aerospace), studying localized corrosion initiation, characterizing porous electrodes, and investigating ion transport in membranes. The M470 base platform provides the scanning stage and integrated FRA for frequency-domain measurements. HORIBA’s SXM software generates impedance images (Bode maps, phase maps) across the scanned area.
