QCM-D

Quartz Crystal Microbalance with Dissipation Monitoring (QCM-D) is a real-time surface analytical technique that monitors adsorption and structural changes of molecular films with nanogram mass sensitivity. By oscillating a piezoelectric quartz crystal and measuring both frequency shift (mass) and energy dissipation (viscoelasticity), QCM-D provides a unique dual-parameter window into interfacial processes. NewRoad provides QCM-D instruments for research in biomolecular interactions, thin-film characterization, electrochemistry, and materials science.

How it works

FROM PRINCIPLE TO APPLICATION

QCM-D applies an alternating voltage across a piezoelectric quartz crystal, causing it to oscillate at its resonant frequency. When mass adsorbs onto the crystal surface, the frequency decreases proportionally. By periodically stopping the drive voltage, the system measures how quickly oscillations decay — the dissipation — which reflects the mechanical properties of the adsorbed film. Simultaneous frequency and dissipation measurements at multiple overtones enable modeling of film thickness, density, and viscoelasticity.
