Optical Tensiometer

Tensiometry and Contact Angle measurement techniques characterize the surface energy and wettability of solid materials and the interfacial tension of liquids. Optical tensiometers measure contact angle, surface free energy and dynamic wetting, while force tensiometers determine surface and interfacial tension. These techniques are essential in coatings, adhesives, printing, biomaterials, detergency and semiconductor manufacturing.

How it works

FROM PRINCIPLE TO APPLICATION

In optical tensiometry, a high-resolution camera images a liquid drop resting on a solid surface (sessile drop method) or hanging from a needle (pendant drop method). Automated drop shape analysis software fits the drop profile to calculate contact angle, surface tension and interfacial tension values. In force tensiometry, a Wilhelmy plate or Du Noüy ring is immersed in a liquid and the force acting on it is measured by a precision balance as the liquid surface interacts with the probe. This force, combined with the known probe geometry, gives surface tension with high accuracy.
